“I well remember the first day I worked with AJ. It turned out to be quite a busy day. As it began, I was all alone in the Eugene Food Room. It looked like I was on my own. I had made what calls I could, but now had to just wait and hope that some volunteers would show up before opening. Shortly before 11 AM, AJ came through the door. I knew him, but had not worked with him.
AJ and I opened the food room, and for about 30 minutes we were alone. It was a hectic day, but when I saw how AJ treated people, and how he stayed calm and did the work we needed to do, I knew we would make it through the day just fine. When we were done I told AJ that if he were with me, we can handle anything that comes down the road. And I feel that way even now. AJ’s kind and confident reception of people virtually dissolves tension and allows the process to flow smoothly.”
Assistant Executive Director, Stephanie Talbott, recognizes the way that AJ’s service sets a example of treating each individual who requests assistance with dignity and respect.
"AJ always has a smile on his face and a kind word for everyone. It's really the way he treats people that makes him stand out. The fact that he loves helping others comes across through his helpfulness and his great attitude. He positively glows while he is working in the Food Room."
Please join us in thanking AJ for his remarkable volunteer service when he is presented the Mary Hull Volunteer of the Year Award at the Annual Dinner on July 16, 2009.
